i've been predicting that yellow would be the color for 2009. it's perfect for the upcoming year of uncertainty because it evokes optimism and hope. i checked out the pantone institute's website and it just so happens that they agree with me...or i agree with them. pantone is the "global authority on color" and influences trends in all industries, usually beginning with fashion. this year's hue is officially called mimosa.
"The color yellow exemplifies the warmth and nurturing quality of the sun, properties we as humans are naturally drawn to for reassurance," explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. "Mimosa also speaks to enlightenment, as it is a hue that sparks imagination and innovation."
i started my spring semester this week and i'm already excited about some of my assignments. my integrated communications course requires us to design a complex set of materials that must function together as a whole. we'll be spending the semester creating deliverables for a film festival for a director of our choice. this will include an identity, huge poster, 24 page catalog, 3 advertisements, dvd packaging, tickets, film trailer, uniform designs, environmental signage and souvenir items. and that's just one of my clases.
we haven't selected our director yet so we're spending this week researching our top three choices by watching their films, writing up a report on each director and creating mood boards. each mood board needs to include found imagery and typography that we feel reflect the consistent visual and conceptual elements in the films.
the three mood boards i created above are for frank capra (it's a wonderful life, mr. smith goes to washington), mira nair (the namesake, monsoon wedding) and jean-pierre jeunet (amelie). it was a lot of fun!
beautiful! i just received lia and gregg's wedding invite and i think it's lovely. they are getting married in mexico so lia used mexican banknotes as her inspiration. the invitations were letterpress printed by the bride and groom and lia decided to use a blind emboss which makes an impression without ink. we had a good laugh when we compared this with the bridal shower invites i designed. they complement each other so well considering we didn't work together!
lia and i used to work at the same package design firm years ago and have remained friends ever since so i was thrilled that she asked me to design her bridal shower invites. the theme for the bridal shower is tea and cupcakes. i really wanted the piece to be three-dimensional since we love package design, so i tried to incorporate that and the shower theme into the design by including an actual tea bag that was personalized with the event details. the circular graphics were inspired by doilies and the colors were chosen by the bride for the wedding.
alex is a classmate and friend of mine. he's a very talented designer and musician so i decided to post one of his youtube videos because one of his covers (viva la vida) is available on itunes! a poster alex designed in our summer typography course recently won an award from STEP inside design magazine and there's a great description of the assignment and alex's solution on scott hansen's blog.
as a graphic designer by day and graduate design student by night, i'm saturated in design and constantly seeking new sources of inspiration. this blog serves as an archive of anything that catches my attention.
